Summary of Program Goals

The student will:

  • relate art and architecture to “real life” in terms of language/literature, engineering, science, mathematics, and history/politics.

  • develop an understanding of the role/use/purpose/impact of art and architecture in the life of the period being studied.

  • compare and contrast works from different periods, and trace stylistic developments in reference to history.

  • analyze and describe both what he actually sees and what he is able to extrapolate/interpret from a work.

  • develop a clear understanding of basic “art concepts” like color, tone and hue, proportion, elements of stylization, lighting, aerial and liner perspective, etc.

  • use an art vocabulary appropriate to grade level and unit of study.

  • use materials and techniques that were used in art and architecture during each historical period studied.

  • develop an appreciation of and interest in art and architecture from many periods.

  • recognize and develop and appreciation of those who contribute(d) to the fields of art and architecture.

  • develop individual artistic and technical skills.
